How to make a galah puppet

How much fun would it be reading about Gabbo’s cheeky flying lesson and being able to let the students fly him around the room while doing it!? This puppet was so easy to make, and you could do it for next to nothing.

This activity could be easily adapted to create a puppet based on any bird, you’d just need the right colours!

What you will need

  • Coat hanger (I found this one at the local op shop, already with the pink tassles – score!)
  • Pipe cleaner
  • Light cardboard (white, and a tiny bit of pink)
  • Google eye
  • Hot glue gun
  • String
  • Strong stick or piece of wood

I kept a copy of the The Tweeting Galah close by so that I could replicate Gabbo’s famous yellow crest and smiling beak as best I could. I simply wrapped the pipecleaner around the hook of the hanger, and glued the card from behind to form his face. I was so lucky to find a pink tassled coat hanger, however you could quite easily re-create this yourself with some patience and wool (or use a big piece of felt, or feathers etc). Once you’ve glued on the mouth and eyes he’s ready to go – once you’ve attached him to your stick of course!
